Zion Lutheran Church
Zion offers Sunday School instruction for everyone ages 3-adult. Come learn with us!
Sunday School Classes are held each Sunday, September through May, during the education hour, 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. There are classes for 3 year olds through 8th grade. There are also Bible Classes during the education hour for High School students and adults. The major goal of these classes is to present Jesus Christ as God's Son, come into the world to rescue man from sin and death as well as to promote a certainty of God's eternal, undying, undiminishing love for us, His redeemed people. Depending on the age of the students, the Bible lessons are enhanced using crafts, recitation, and music. You may call the church office for more information at 708-946-2271.
Some of our yearly events and activities include the following:
Rally Day The first Sunday after Labor Day is the kick off for the new fall schedule. Students meet in their classrooms and attend devotions together in Church, returning to their classrooms for the completion of class. Sunday School teachers are installed during the 10:30 worship service. Following the service, all children in attendance participate in a balloon release. The annual church picnic follows on the church lawn. All are invited to attend. The Christian Growth Committee provides meat and place settings. Everyone attending is encouraged to bring a dish to share. Coffee, pop and water are available. Games for all ages (including adults) are led by the Christian Growth Committee.
Christmas Service The Sunday School students participate in the Christmas Service on the Sunday before Christmas, during the 10:30 worship service. All students witness with their songs and recitations. Following the service, all children in attendance receive a bag of fruit, peanuts and candy.
Easter Service The Sunday School students participate in the 9:00 a.m. worship service on Easter Sunday. All students participate with songs and recitations.
Service Projects – Gospel Outreach: Used religious materials are collected throughout the year to be sent to missionaries in India and Africa. Items include Bibles, Sunday School material, devotion booklets, hymnals, Bible story books, prayer books, greeting cards, CDs, bookmarks, etc. Part of the Sunday School offering pays for the postage.
Lutheran Missionary Support: Each year a group is supported by our Sunday School offerings. This past fall our offerings helped Lutheran Association of Missionary Pilots. (In previous years we have supported missionaries in Africa and Seminary students at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne.)
Lutheran World Relief School Kits: Each fall Sunday School students bring in items to complete School Kits which are sent to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Minnesota and then sent overseas. Each kit includes spiral binders of lined paper, 6 pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, small box of crayons, blunt scissors, 12 sheets of construction paper and a ruler placed in a homemade school bag.
Christmas cards for military: Sunday School students sign Christmas cards and include a short note for soldiers overseas.
